Nutrition: Squeezing In Fiber

SqueezeItIn.com Girls

slice only no backAre you resolving to eat better in 2010?  At SqueezeItIn we give you clever and effective ways to squeeze exercise into your daily routine, but we’re also on the hunt for great ways to help you squeeze in nutrition.  With that in mind, we asked  NeverSayDiet.com’s Karolina Starczak to share her favorite tips for squeezing more fiber into your diet.

Here’s the latest installment from Karolina’s series “Squeezing in Fiber Can Get Rough:”

Karolina_StarOne of fiber’s biggest perks is that it can’t find its way into our fat cells. Instead, it simply passes through, undigested. Now before you down that whole bag of celery, let’s explore the science behind fiber’s magic. When fiber enters the small intestine, it actually signals a hormone called CCK (cholecystokinin), whose job is to tell the brain that we are full. This is the “fullness” hormone that makes us put our fork down with ease. Usually this hormone is release when fat is being digested and suppresses our appetite, but it has been found that fiber has a similar affect, minus the calories.

Nutrition: Making Fiber Fit

SqueezeItIn.com Girls

slice only no backEarlier this year we asked our Facebook Fans, “What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to ‘squeezing in’ nutrition?” The “bulk” of your answers: Making fiber fit. So to “get things moving” we turned to NeverSayDiet.com’s Karolina Starczak who came up with weeks of “regular” fiber-filled guest blog posts. Here’s the first installment from her series “Squeezing in Fiber Can Get Rough:”

Karolina_StarFiber’s claim to fame may have started with “an apple a day”…, but if you’ve been keeping tabs on our dear old friend, then you probably know that it’s been popping up in everything from Splenda® to yogurt. Yep! Artificial sweeteners with fiber—a little over the top in my opinion, but it definitely places fiber in the supermarket hall of fame. So what’s the big deal with fiber and why is it bombarding store shelves everywhere?

Technically, fiber is a carbohydrate, but our bodies cannot break it down. Its resistance to our digestive enzymes gives it unique characteristics that benefit us in several ways and give this unbreakable carb health properties unlike any other nutrient. Not only can it lower cholesterol and the risk of diabetes, but it helps keep us fuller longer while keeping our digestive tracts healthy and regular.

This week’s Making Fiber Fit Tip from Karolina:

• Skip fruit and veggie juices. While juices can have plenty of vitamins and taste great, they lack the fiber of whole fruits and vegetables. A cup of apple juice only has 0.2 grams of fiber, but a whole crunchy apple can have about 5 grams, depending on the size.

From Jen & Jaclyn:

Confession: We have the (not so healthy) tendency of turning Thanksgiving into our own personal girl vs. food eating contest. Nutrition: Holiday Baking Tips ‘n Tricks

SqueezeItIn.com Girls

SqueezeItIn.com featured guest bloggers Jen & Jaclyn of fit·n·pretty have found a way to have their cake and keep their skinny jeans, too!   Better yet, they’re sharing their tried and true tips for baking denim-friendly treats that will keep you looking good after eating goodies! And, of course, they included recipes. Enjoy!

BeFitNPretty Logo

From Jen & Jaclyn:

The holidays wouldn’t be the same without the sweet aroma of pies, cookies and breads wafting from a warm kitchen. There is something very comforting about mixing up an old family recipe and sharing the fruits of your labor with family and friends. The only problem with all of this home baked goodness, is that with each sugar cookie, slice of pie, and piece of pumpkin bread you eat, the chances of fitting into your jeans come January 2nd dwindle. And we are in a recession girls! We can’t afford to be buying new pants after convincing ourselves that our current pair has shrunk in the wash (fyi, they didn’t). But for us, not baking during the holidays (or anytime for that matter), is not an option. So rather than hanging up our aprons and putting away our wooden spoons, we have devised some sneaky and very fit·n·pretty ways to lighten up our holiday baking.

Nutrition: Starving Cancer

SqueezeItIn.com Girls

pink ribbon 2Here is this week’s powerful breast cancer fighting tip from Nikki Ver Steeg, a Registered Dietician, Certified Wellness Coach, and founder of Your Diet Designer, LLC .

guest blogger - Nikki

If you knew how to starve cancer, would you do it? Some food choices starve that cancer and some feed it. As you fight for your life, be sure to starve that cancer! Starve it by not eating a lot of sugar and processed carbs like white bread, processed cereals, soda, candy, etc. These items either contain an excess amount of sugar or they are converted to sugar easily in your system. Cancer loves sugar! Remember, you are an active part in the fight against breast cancer. Do your part by consuming less processed carbohydrates and sugar-filled snacks.

Nutrition: Green Tea & Breast Cancer

SqueezeItIn.com Girls

pink ribbon 2Here is this week’s powerful breast cancer fighting tip from Nikki Ver Steeg, a Registered Dietician, Certified Wellness Coach, and founder of Your Diet Designer, LLC .

guest blogger - Nikki

Have you had your tea today? Green tea is a great cancer fighter – loaded with flavonoids. These flavanoids limit the growth of cancer cells while increasing cancer cell death. Put the squeeze on your cancer by drinking a couple cups of green tea daily.  But don’t forget, brew it yourself to get the most benefit! The more processed your tea, the less antioxidants you take in. So start from scratch with a green tea bag and enjoy that hot or cold beverage a few times a day.
