Nutrition: Shopping Made Simple
SqueezeItIn.com GirlsGenerous. Smart. Caring. Real. We can’t say enough about our guest bloggers Sue and Angelle of NourishMD. They’re back this week to share another tool to help you keep it real at the grocery store:
In last week’s blog, you learned how 20 minutes a week spent on planning out your meals and snacks will increase your health. You focused on adding more REAL food to your daily diet. Now that you have your plan, it’s time to create your shopping list. Taking 15-20 minutes to create a list will keep you on track when you get to the store.
Our free downloadable form will help ensure you have a good variety of Powerful Proteins, Friendly Fats and Colorful Carbs. When your list is made, then you are ready to go shopping.
When you get to the grocery store, the key is to stick to your list. Unless a sale item is on your list or can be a healthy REAL food substitution, leave it on the shelf. When you save money at the grocery store by purchasing a highly processed fake food, you pay the price with your health.
You have probably heard it before, but if you’re not doing it, you haven’t truly learned it: buy most of your food from the perimeter of the store. The majority of REAL food, even in health-oriented grocery stores, is around the perimeter. You’ll find your Colorful Carbs in the produce section, which should fill at least ½ your cart. Usually Powerful Proteins such as meats, poultry and fish are along the perimeter too.
Of course we realize you have to venture into the center of the store to pick up your organic dark chocolate and a few other items. So, when you have to hit the inside aisles, remember to do your Grocery Glutes and remember to use your list to keep you on track. Don’t be hypnotized by colorful packaging or unsubstantiated health claims. Remember to think REAL food – the food your great-grandmother would have had access to – and leave the fake foods on the shelf. Your dollar is your vote. Vote for foods that support your health and food companies will take notice.
